[ Study Bibles] [Christian Study]
Brief Description: First published in
1978,
the Ryrie Study Bible is the work of noted theologian and former Dallas Theological
Seminary professor Dr. Charles Caldwell Ryrie. It is often called the
"Scholar's Study Bible," though that is probably somewhat of a stretch. In
1995 or thereabouts an "Expanded Edition" was released with more notes.
It is staunchly dispensational, and is quite representative of the position of Dallas
Seminary and its founder, Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer. Some New Testament only, large
page, wide margin editions were also published which are good for in-depth study.
Advantages:
Excellent outlines, book introductions, and quality notes, as well as a lengthy Synopsis
of Bible Doctrine section in the back of the Ryrie are all worthy of note. This is
probably the most consistently annotated study Bible available, both qualitatively and
doctrinally. There is a wealth of other information in the appendix, including a
very informative time line. A fairly good balance was struck between putting too
much information in and making the work unwieldy or not providing enough information.
Does fairly fearlessly confront some of the more controversial verses. Very
clear on a literal 6 day creation, unlike the Scofield.
Disadvantages: The original Ryrie
was a little light on the amount of notes, part of the aforementioned trade-off. The
Expanded Edition does add many more. Not a whole lot of information that is
practical in living, but then again this is a theological and didactic work, not a
devotional.
Recommendation: A
solid work which is a valuable reference tool to anyone's library. Highly
recommended.
